He supported the Duy Tân (Modernization) movement, for which he was briefly imprisoned. He is historically noted for assisting Nguyễn Tất Thành (later Hồ Chí Minh) on his journey from Phan Thiết to Sài Gòn, along with Hồ Tá Bang.
